International News: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order guaranteeing Qatar's security. The order states that the US will take any necessary steps to protect Qatar, including military action. Trump's order aims to reassure Qatar that the US will stand with it.
In fact, Israel attacked Hamas leaders in Doha on September 9th, killing six people, including a member of Qatar's security forces. Trump 's new order states that any armed attack on Qatar will be considered a threat to its peace and security and will take all necessary measures to defend Qatar.
Qatari officials have not yet commented on this order. The legal status of this order is somewhat unclear. In the US, such orders or agreements usually require Senate approval, but the president can enter into many international agreements without Senate approval. Obama also signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) nuclear agreement with Iran in 2015. The president also has the final say on military action.
Why is Qatar important to America?
Qatar is a small but wealthy country located in the Persian Gulf. It has vast natural gas reserves. Qatar is home to the largest US military base in the Middle East (Al Udeid). Around 10,000 US troops are stationed there. In 2022, Joe Biden granted Qatar the status of a "Major Non-NATO Ally," reflecting its strategic importance.
Experts say the Middle East is crucial to the US, so Trump's order isn't limited to just protecting Qatar. It's a step to strengthen America's strategic presence throughout the region.
